Swimming on Monday - Lifesaving Day

On Monday 25th, students signed up for the intensive swimming program will be learning essential lifesaving skills. We ask all students who are going swimming on Monday to bring a spare set of clothing so that they are able to practice swimming fully clothed (long sleeve top and long trousers). It is also a good idea to bring a platic bag so that they can place their wet clothes in them afterwards.

StarLab Incursion

The students of 3/4 Neighbourhoods had an out of this world experience when the CSIRO StarLab came to our school with an inflatable planetarium last Wednesday. Lucas from CSIRO was able to extend our knowledge on how seasons worked due to the tilt of the planetary axis. We were then treated to an inter-planetary exploration through the solar system and beyond!

Science Rotations - How the World Works

Students predicted how food dyes from chocolate buttons would mix in water. The surprising results demonstrated the role of prior knowledge in making predictions. The food dye in the outer layer of the coating travels with the dissolved sugar. Because sugar is more dense than water, it sinks as it dissolves and spreads to areas of lower sugar concentration. This lesson was also perfect for working cooperatively in small groups

People's Parade

On Friday, the students of Year 3/4 Neighbourhoods took part in the People's Parade. Many families and students came out to watch as we paraded our fantastic costumes and items around the outer perimeter of the school. Luca's grandfather and his friend from Williamstown RSL Band kindly joined us for the afternoon to lead the parade, playing the bagpipes and the drum. Many residents came out from their homes to cheer us on, while passers-by stopped to watch. The students brought with them musical instruments and those that didn't chanted or sang songs. We all made lots of noise! It was the most beautiful spectacle and a fantastic conclusion to the first half of our Culture Inquiry.

Please enjoy some of our photos (click on the photos to enlarge them). If you have any photos to share with the blog, please email them to the blog email address (phps34@gmail.com).

Year 3/4 Assembly

The students sing "Sanpo". Click to see a larger photo.

On Tuesday, the Year 3/4 Neighbourhoods presented their current learning in the school assembly. During this term, 3/4 students have been exploring their own cultural connections during our Culture Inquiry. Some of these students presented the items, music and movements related to their culture and showed this off by parading in the assembly. This has been a great practice for our real parade on Friday. We finished off the assembly by singing the Japanese song "Sanpo." This is a song from the movie "My Neighbour Totoro" about walking together with friends.

Here are some photos of the assembly for your enjoyment (click on any image to see larger versions).
